| Middlemost was born about 1845, the son of Thomas William Wawn and Elizabeth Annie Middlemost, in South Shields, County Durham. At the age of about 15 he apprenticed to the engineering firm of Messrs. Dudgeon, Black Wall, London. During his time as the Third Engineer of the SS Medway she was employed, in conjunction with the CS Great Eastern and CS Albany in laying the Atlantic cable in 1866 and recovering the 1865 cable which had been broken and lost. In August 1868 he obtained his First Class Engineer's Certificate but | never went to sea again and shortly afterwards obtained an appointment as Engineer Surveyor with the Board of Trade. In 1874 together with a Mr. Willcox, he established the firm of Wawn and Willcox, consulting engineers and ship surveyors. With the death of Mr. Willcox, the business continued under the style of Messrs. M. Wawn & Sons and he was joined in the firm by his sons Dominique, Thomas ("Tom") and Allan. He married Jenny Eudora Deneulain on 5 September 1870. |
