Thomas was born on 31 January 1821, the son of Christopher Wawn and Margaret Twizell, at South Shields, County Durham. He started his shipbuilding apprenticeship at the age of 16. He and Elizabeth Ann Middlemost eloped to be married in Jarrow in 1842. He started his own shipbuilding business in 1846 in South Shields. It closed when the Northumberland and Durham District Bank failed in 1852 and he became a Surveyor of the Whitehaven District for Lloyd's | Register of British and Foreign Shipping. When he died, he was Senior Surveyor for Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping with an office in White Lion Court, Cornhill. His son Middlemost was also trained as a naval engineer and was a cofounder of Wawn & Wilcox, Sunderland, an engineering and ship surveyors firm. It was succeeded by M. Wawn & Sons, consulting engineers and propeller makers, Sunderland. |
