| Relph was born on 26 December 1794, the son of Robert Middlemost and Ann Relph, at Sedgefield, County Durham. He married Mary Ward in 1821. He set up a business in South Shields as a linen draper and succeeded very well. His wife, Mary was a clever and capable woman and they built a nice home. John had his hunter and "rode with the hounds". He was much respected and became a Director of South Shields Bank. In those days, Banks were not "Limited" so when there came a slump and a "run" on the Bank, he and the other Directors had to meet the "run", and it meant financial ruin for him. His business was gone and he had to begin again. John Rylands of Manchester was a cloth merchant and Ralph had been one of his customers. He wrote and offered him a position in his Manchester warehouse, so he and his family left South Shields and began again in Manchester. Again, he lost everything about 1846-48. John was much respected and his good name and straight dealing was remembered for many years after he left South Shields. He settled in Manchester and he and all his sons became cloth merchants. |
