Robert was born on 2 October 1814, the son of James Smith Esq. and Mary Isabella Pechell, at Ashlyn's Hall, Great Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire. After Robert married Mary Ann Drever, he assumed by royal license, the additional surname and arms of Dorrien.

Mary was born on 25 January 1825, the daughter of Thomas Drever, M.D. and Mary Dorrien, at St. George Hanover Square, London.

The will, daated January 1876, of Mr. Robert Algernon Smith-Dorrien, late of Haresfoot, Great Berkhampstead, Herts, who died on the 8th ult., was proved on the 10th inst. by Mrs. Mary Ann Smith-Dorrien, the widow, the sole executrix, the persoanal estate being sworn under £35,000. The testator gives alll his real and personal estate to his wife.

Mrs. Smith-Dorrien The death is announced of Mrs. Smith-Dorrien at Haresfoot, Berkhamstead, at an advanced age. She was the mother of Mr. Dorrien-Smith, who holds the Scilly Islands by a quasi feudal tenure from the Duchy of Cornwall, of General Sir H. L. Smith-Dorrien, in command at Aldershot, and of Admiral Smith-Dorrien. For very many years Mrs. Smith-Dorrien had been a familiar figure in the social life of West Herts, where she was popular and most respected.
