Robert Appleby was born about 1835, the son of George Bartram and Margaret Appleby. He started in partnership with his father, George in 1854. When his father retired in 1871, Robert began a partnership with George Haswell, the firm being styled Bartram, Haswell & Co. This partnership continued until 1890, when his elder sons George and William Naizby joined the firm, which was renamed Bartram and Sons, South Docks. Sir Robert was knighted in 1921. He outlived both his sons, but by then the management of the firm had been taken over by his grandsons, Robert Appleby and George Hylton Bartram, George's sons. Robert married Ann Naizby, who died at the early age of 32, and he subsequently married Margaret Agnes Rhind. |
Ann was born about 1837, the daughter of William Naizby and Ann Bulmer, a shipbuilder. William built ships from 1836 to his death in 1867. He had no sons to carry on the business. I have identified the following children: |
