George Bartram                                     1800-1891
George, first of the shipbuilding Bartrams, was an orphan (possibly the son of Thomas Bartram, carpenter, and Mary Lister) who, at the age of eleven, in 1811, began his apprenticeship with brothers William and John Mowbray Gales of Hylton, with whom he remained for seven years. Then he went to sea as a ship's carpenter, but returned to the Wear, and became manager for Dryden, who built ships   at Biddick Ford. Later, he was associated with Robert Reay, known at Hylton as "Squire" Reay. George then went into partnership with John Lister, and on 7 July 1837, they launched their first ship, the Crown, for William Thompson, a baker, of Monkwearmouth. The partnership lasted for eighteen years, until 1854. George then partnered with his son Robert Appleby until 1871, when George retired.
