George Clark                                       1815-1885
George was born on 25 September 1815, at Fatfield, County Durham. As far back as 1848, George Clark was carrying on a general engineering business on the river Wear. With the advent of iron shipbuilding and the introduction of steam navigation, his firm concentrated on marine engineering. In 1854 George Clark's company built the first marine engine tried out on the Wear. It was fitted into the steamer Alfred, built by James Laing. In 1876, the Fenton (built by Austin and Hunter) was engined. She was probably the first of the modern type of self-trimming coal-carrying steamers. George has made untold contributions  to  the  shipbuilding  industry  of Sunderland,   primarily through the George Clark engine works. But he made an interesting, and little known contribution by introducing the first iron ship built in Sunderland. Her name was Loftus, and she was built by George Clark in conjunction with Barkus, who was a shipbuilder. She was very small, of 77 tons, was schooner rigged and classed A.1 at Lloyds. The owner was G. Foster, the vessel described as a Sunderland coaster belonging to the Port of Sunderland, was launched on 27 February 1852.
George died on 15 January 1885, and is buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery.
Jane Lockie                                         1819-1882
Jane was born about 1819, the daughter of John and Agnes Lockie, in Bishopwearmouth. She died on 27 April 1882, and is buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery.
