William was born on 9 May 1843, at The Old Hall, Stone, Staffordshire, the eldest son of Dr. William Masefield Esq. and Mary Elizabeth Beech, dau. of Richard Beech, of Eccleshall. He entered Jesus College, Cambridge, at age 18 , on 1 September 1861. Earned his B.A. in 1865, and his M.A. in 1876. He was ordained deacon in 1867; priest in 1868; was curate of Bickenhill, Warwickshire from 1867 to 1874; curate of Holcot, Northamptonshire from 1877 to 1882, and Vicar from 1882 to his death on 25 July 1884, at the early age of 41 years..
