Stanley was the third son of Robert Thompson and Georgiana Andrew.
He was born on 1 December 1880.
He married Wilhelmine Vera Doxford on 7 June 1906.
He served in World War I, and his oufit took part in the landings at Gallipoli, where Stanley was wounded in the leg as soon as he hit the beach.
He recovered and was sent home.
He had a splendid house,
in a bend of the River Tees, near Darlington, which supported a butler and a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce. Stanley created The Silver Line, a fleet of cargo ships. The firm was headquartered in Bishopsgate, London, where Stanley also maintained a home, Palmerston House.
His business interests also included Stanley & John Thompson Ltd., Stanley & John Thompson (Management) Ltd., St. Helens Steamshipping Company. (1912) Ltd., and Thompson Graham & Co. Ltd.. Stanley died on 6 October 1948, at age 67. Wilhelmine Vera Doxford 1883-1955 Wilhelmine was born 4 January 1883, the daughter of Sir William Theodore and Margaret (nee Wilkinson) Doxford, shipbuilder. Sir William (1841-1916) was the eldest of four sons, who with their father, William, controlled William Doxford & Sons, Ltd. This was a shipbuilding firm that was larger than the Thompson's. The Doxfords were a very wealthy family at this time. Wilhelmine developed multiple sclerosis soon after she was married and spent the rest of her life in a wheel chair. She died on 7 February 1955, age 72, at Rutson Hospital, Northallerton, Yorkshire. I have only identified one child: |
