Samuel Day Wills                                    1837-1909
  Samuel was born on 14 March 1837, the son of Henry Overton Wills II and Isabella Board, at Bristol, Gloucestershire.
  He decided that he did not want to work in the tobacco industry and instead set up his own partnership Samuel Wills and Company - varnish enamel and paint manufacturers.
  He was a Fellow of the Chemical Society, became a deacon of Redland Park and Kingsland Congregational Churches, Treasurer of the Bristol YMCA, Director of the London Missionary Society, Vice President of Bristol Missionary Society, on the committee of the Bristol Dispensary and a J.P.

MR. S. D. WILLS
  The death took place on Wednesday morning at his Residence, Stainmoor, Pembroke-road, Clifton, of Mr. Samuel Day Wills, son of the late Mr. H. O. Wills, brother of the late Sir Frederick Wills, and of Sir E. Payson Wills, and cousin of Lord Winterstoke.
  Mr. Wills was born at Bristol on March 14, 1837, and was educated at Taunton and Amersham.   He first married Miss Elizabeth Granger Bourne, daughter of Mr. W. T. Bourne, of Walker Hall, Staindrop, Durham, and secondly Miss Eva Blanche Tubbs, fourth daughter of Mr. C. F. Tubbs, of Beechfield, near Plymouth.   Mr. Wills retired from business as oil and colour merchant in Castle green, Bristol, some eight or nine years ago, the business now
being carried on by his son, Mr. Norman Wills, while another son, Mr. Harold Wills, has been engaged in missionary work at Travancore, but is now home on furlough.   Mr. Samuel Wills identified himself with the Congregational Church movement in Bristol, and was generous in his support of its churches and other agencies   He was treasurer of the Bristol Y.M.C.A., a director of the London Missionary Society, vice-president of the Bristol Missionary Society, a member of the committee of the Bristol Dispensary, chairman in 1899 of the County Union of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, a member of the committee of the Congregational Union of England and Wales, and a magistrate for Bristol.   In 1875 he was elected Fellow of the Chemical Society.

  The grave of Samuel Day Wills, and family has been among the missing at Arnos Vale cemetery, however, good friend, Dave Napier, has found the location and the monument is finally revealed. Pass the cursor over the photo to see how it was hidden from view.
