OBITUARY
  The late Major Ralph Shuttleworth Allen, of Bathampton Manor, whose death occurred on Sunday at his Somerset residence at the age of 68, was the eldest son of the late Mr. Henry Allen, of Bathampton, by his marriage with Frances, daughter of Mr. Henry Lloyd.   He was born in the year 1818, and was educated at Woolwich.   He was a magistrate and deputy-lieutenant for Somerset, and formerly held a captain's commission in the Royal Artillery, and was afterwards major in the Royal Cornwall and Devon Miners' Artillery.   He sat for East Somerset in the Conservative interest from 1868 to 1879.   He was also chairman of the Bath Board of Guardians.   Major Allen was twice married - first, to Annie Elizabeth, daughter of the late Sir Samuel Cunard, and secondly, to Ethel, daughter of Mr. John Roy Allen, of Lyngford-house, near Taunton.   He was a direct lineal descendant of the brother of Ralph Allen, of Prior Park, the friend and correspondent of Pope and Bishop Warburton.
