Lewis Potter                                       1807-1881
Lewis was born on 29 May 1807, the son of James Potter and Janet Wilson, at Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland. He had a keen mind for business, and became very prosperous as a shipper. He then speculated in Australian land, and became very wealthy. He was invited to join the board of the City of Glasgow Bank in 1859. He soon became a director, and he borrowed large sums for his land speculation. In the 1878 recession, the City of Glasgow Bank collapsed with debts of over £5 million. The directors were found guilty.
