John Young Short 1844-1900
John was born on 8 January 1844, the son of George Short and Martha Young, in Sunderland.
He was one of Sunderland's best known citizens, taking a leading part in the social life of the town, and in addition, an active interest in public affairs.
Besides being a Shipbuilder and Timber merchant, he was, in addition, a Shipowner, being a member of the firm of James Westall.
He took control of Shorts' Shipbuilders at age 41, in 1885, on the death of his father, George Short who founded the firm in 1850.
After his death in 1900, the surviving partners decided to turn the business into a private company, with Joseph Short and Thomas S. Short as joint Managing Directors, Mr. Joseph Short acting as Chairman.
Mary Ada Smart 1853-1932
Mary was born about 1853, the only daughter of Thomas Smart, in Sunderland. She died on 14 August 1932
