John Clay                                             1802-1887
John was born about 1802, in South Shields, County Durham. He was the first mayor of the County Borough of South Shields. John was also Manager of the Northumberland and District Bank; the owner of a brewery in Holborn, proprietor of a farm and Grotto at Marsden (South Shields), and engaged in shipbuilding. He built the first iron ship that was launched from a South Shields yard in about 1847. In November 1852 he was appointed a representative of the Corporation on the River Tyne Commission, and was succeeded in that capacity in 1855. The family left the district then and moved to London, where they settled. There is a full length portrait of John hanging in the South Shields Town Hall.
