James William Douglas Evans            1884-1976
James was born on 11 November 1884, the son of David Evans and Emily Margaret Cox, at Ffrwdgrech, Breconshire, Wales.
James was educated at a boarding school in Bristol then at Winchester College finishing his education at Cambridge with a degree in mathematics. About 1910 he was commissioned in the 21st Lancers and served in Egypt, India and the Northwest frontier. In 1917 a unit of the 21st were sent to Mesopotamia where my father led one of the last cavalry charges in the British army against a Turkish redoubt at Mosel. He was wounded and shipped to a military hospital in Basra.
Awarded a mention in dispatches he was given three months leave. He and two native bearers, two mauser rifles a copy of Shakespeare's works and a Bible journeyd from Srinagar into the Karakoram range, climbing to 22,000 feet in search of Ibex. During this time armed with a folding large Kodak camera he took many interesting photographs He returned to England in 1921 on the disbandment of his regiment which became the 17th Lancers. He inherited Stoke Court and the four farms, and married Mary Curtis at Caynham church in 1923.

  EVANS - On December 14th, 1971, at her home, Stanyeld, Church Stretton, in her 71st year, Mary Evans, the beloved wife of James William Douglas Evans.   Cremation Private.   A memorial service will be held at Caynham Church, Saturday, December 18th, at 12 noon.   Family flowers only please, but if desired, donations for Caynham Church may be sent to the Vicar, the Rev.
