Henry was born on 17 May 1783, the son of Sir Henry Russell, Bart. and Anne Barbara Whitworth, at Dover, Kent. He went to Calcutta with his father in May 1798; appointed a writer, Nov. 1798, Assistant Secretary to the Resident at Hyderabad, 1800; Secretary, 1802; Third member of the Commission appointed to investigate the claims of the Nawab of the Carnatic, 1807; Officiating Resident at Poona, 1809; the British representative at the Court of Hyderabad, 1811-1820, during the Mahratta-Pindari War, in which the Nizam's Army proved of much service. | Another person who accompanied the family to India in 1798, was the niece of his mother; a young lady named Hon. Rose Whitworth Aylmer, born October 1779; only daughter of Henry, fourth Baron Aylmer, and his wife Catherine, who was sister to Lord Whitworth, Ambassador to Buonaparte in 1803. She ultimately became engaged to Henry, but died of cholera on 2 March 1800, at her uncle's house in Calcutta. Henry succeeded as the 2nd Baronet of Swallowfield, Berkshire on 19 April 1836, upon the death of his father, Sir Henry (1751-1836). |
