Benoit (Benedict) was born on 4 June 1745, the son of Baron Claude Nicolas Louis Mottet de La Mottet (of the Mound) and Madelaine Constant, at Château de Compiègne, Compiègne, France. He became the Deputy of the "Great East of France", police chief of the Navy, then commander and president of the provincial Council of Chandernagor, colonial prefect (1803), police chief-director of the French establishments of India, and president of the Superior council of Pondicherry, which was a French colony in India, consisting of four non-contiguous enclaves, or districts, and named for the largest, Pondicherry (Pondichéry in French). | The French came following the Portuguese and the Dutch, and took root there. In the 18th century, in the wake of wars between England and France, the city changed hands several times. Benoit Mottet keeps the presidency of the Council of Pondichéry during the following 23 years of the English occupation. At last, the French took it over on 26th September 1816 and continued to rule for one hundred and thirty eight years, till they left the shores on 31st October 1954, following the transfer of power. Benoit retired on 1 January 1817. |
