Dr. Frederic Septimus Leighton               1799-1892
Dr Fred Leighton was born Sept. 18, 1799, in St Petersburg, where his father, Dr James Boniface Leighton, a Yorkshireman, was court physician to czars Alexander I and Nicholas I of Russia. Fred's mother was Frances I'Anson.
Fred was trained in medicine at Edinburgh. Soon after his marriage to Augusta Susan they traveled to Russia, and in 1830 returned to England and settled in Scarborough. Toward the end of 1833 they re-located, to 22 Argyle Street, London. In 1834 Fred was admitted to the Royal College of Physicians, and that year Augusta Susan sat for her portrait by Edward Foster.
From 1838 to 1841 Fred Leighton was lecturer in forensic medicine at Middlesex Hospital School. His one published lecture was "On the objects and material relations of the Medical Sciences" (1838). Deafness forced him to retire from medicine in 1841.
Augusta Susan was high-strung and in delicate health. She was also rich. From 1838 the family traveled continually, looking for a suitable home. In 1840 Augusta Susan suffered from a serious attack of rheumatic fever, which probably damaged her heart. To help her recuperate Fred quit medicine in 1841 (he was now too deaf to practice) and in the summer of 1841 left England with his family for Europe, the
first of several long sojourns there, traveling through Germany, Switzerland and Italy. In Florence they were temporarily delayed by the illness of their daughter Lina. In Rome she and her brother learned Latin from a young priest.   During the winter the family traveled to Dresden where Fred employed private tutors for his son. In the summer of 1842 they were at Greenford, and the following winter in Berlin. Then to Munich, then Frankfurt. Fred's income was greatly augmented in 1843, when his father died. By June 1845 they were back in England.
They spent the winter of 1845-46 in Florence, then back to Frankfurt, where Fred bought a large house. 1848 was not a good year to be in many parts of Europe, with all the revolutions taking place, so Fred took his family to Brussels, and, after the danger had passed, in 1849, to Paris. In early 1850 they were back in Frankfurt.
In early 1853 they moved to 9 The Circus, Bath, to be near Fred's mother and also Augusta Susan's uncle, James Watson. In 1859 they were off to Florence with their daughter Gussie and the recently widowed Lina. After Augusta Susan's death in 1865, Fred returned to London, where he died on Jan. 24, 1892
