Mr. Magnus Mail
Lost At Sea
Great anxiety is felt in regard to Mr. Magnus Mail, the well-known shipowner of Sunderland and Newcastle.   Mr. Mail, who had been to Norway, was on a voyage during the weekend from Christiana to the Tyne on board the Bessheim.   Early on Sunday morning about breakfast time he was seen by the stewardess apparently going on deck for a walk, as he was wearing his overcoat.   She spoke to him in regard to breakfast and he replied.   That was the last that was seen of him by those on board.   He did not appear at breakfast, and a search being made no trace of him could be found on the vessel, nor has anything been seen of him since by those on board.   At the time that he was last seen the vessel was about 70 to 80 miles from land, and it was very foggy at the time, and it is feared that in walking along the ship he must have fallen overboard and been lost.   The vessel arrived in the Tyne early on Monday morning, when the circumstances were reported to the authorities and since then no trace has been discovered of the unfortunate gentleman.
Mr. Mail, who was about 58 years of age, was a native of Sunderland his father having been well known in
connection with the firm of Mr. James Westoll, with which he occupied a prominent position.   Mr. Mail himself formed the firm of Mail and Holby, shipbrokers and coal exporters of Tyne Dock and was also connected with the firm of Mail Brothers, shipowners of Newcastle.   He was especially well known in connection with the Presbyterian Church circles.   He has been especially identified with North Bridge Street Church, of which he was an elder and on the occasion of the translation of the Rev. J. T. Middlemass to Manchester Mr. Mail, who was brother-in-law to Mr. Middlemass, presented something like 1000 pounds to the church as a thanksgiving offering for Mr. Middlemass' ministry.   This was but one of many gifts made by Mr. Mail, who was of a most generous disposition and his donations were always made with a total absence of ostentation.   He was a Liberal in politics, but took practically no part in public life, though he had occupied the position of chairman of the Liberal Club, which he resigned quite recently.   Of a quiet, retiring disposition, he was a most lovable man, and was held in the highest esteem throughout the town and district.   With his wife and family of one son and three daughters, the greatest sympathy will be felt in the trouble which has befallen them.
