Magnus was born on 28 February 1824, the son of James Mail and Clama Mouat, on the Shetland Isles, Dunrossness, Scotland. He married Eleanora Burnop. He died on 25 March 1903.

Eleanora was born on 12 June 1827, the daughter of John Thomas Burnop and Mary Douglas. She died on 23 November 1900.
