John was born on 22 June 1834, the son of Cuthbert Vaux and Sarah Ann Story. He married Harriet Douglas on 16 October 1861. Upon the death of his father, Cuthbert in 1878, John and his brother Edwin took over the management of the firm. His own untimely death, in 1881, only three years later, led to his two sons Cuthbert and Ernest joining their uncle, Col. Edwin Vaux, in partnership to run the firm. Vaux then became one of the first British brewers to introduce bottled ales and stouts. In 1896 the family business was converted into a private limited liability company. Seven people were present at the first meeting of the new company, C. Vaux & Sons Limited, | which took place on 29th June 1896. Edwin, Cuthbert and Ernest Vaux, Company Secretary Charles Thompson, and three representatives from the Company's auditors and solicitors. Frank Nicholson, a Sunderland accountant, joined the company in 1898 as a manager and secretary. He later married Amy Vaux, and became a director in 1919. His business abilities saw Vaux expand and in 1927, he arranged an amalgamation with North East Breweries Ltd. creating the North East's second largest brewers. The new company was called Vaux and Associated Breweries Ltd. The brewery was closed down in 1999. |
