Cuthbert Vaux, was born in 1813, the son of Cuthbert Vaux, Master Mariner.   He worked as an office boy in the late 1820's in the Noble's Quay Brewery owned by the Horn family.   At that time there were five breweries in Low Street.   Apparently Cuthbert Vaux made little impression at Horn's and left in the early 1830's to begin a partnership with William Storey, using a nearby brewery in newly built Moor Street.   The partnership evolved into a family concern in 1834 when Cuthbert married Sarah Ann Storey, the third daughter of John Storey and his wife Sarah Stafford.   John Storey, probably William's father, ran a painting and glazing business from the family home in Bodlewell Street, close to Noble's Quay.   Cuthbert and Sarah's first child arrived in 1834 and was named after his father, John Storey Vaux.   Shortly after the birth of their second son in 1836, the Vaux and Storey partnership broke up, and the two brewers went their separate ways.   William Storey remained at the Moor

Street Brewery while Cuthbert  Vaux  moved  to  Pemberton  Row,  on  the corner of Matlock and Cumberland Street, a site close to the riverbank and Wearmouth Bridge. Here, in 1837, Cuthbert founded the firm which became Cuthbert Vaux & Sons, and - after almost 150 years - the Vaux Group plc.   Wife Sarah died at age 46, in 1860.   Cuthbert remarried in 1865, to Miss Sarah Veitch.   Cuthbert Vaux died in 1878, leaving an expanding and prosperous business to be carried on by John Storey Vaux and Edwin Vaux.
