| James was born 6 March 1817, in Willington, Northumberland, the son of William Atkinson and Eleanor Scott. He married Margaret Ramsay on 9 May 1842, at Easington, County Durham. He worked as a coal miner in the Willington and New Thornley collieries. He did attempt to escape the coal mines and worked for several years as an Inn Keeper in Kelloe, but the demands of a growing family sent him back into the pit |
where the higher wages reflected the higher risks taken every day. In early 1852 James was recruited by Scottish mine owners when the deep pits were being opened in Lanarkshire. James moved his family to the small village of Nitshill in Renfrewshire Scotland where he worked as a mine manager. He died on 15 August 1886, at Wellington Cottage in Nitshill. |
| Margaret was born about 1822, in Heworth, County Durham, the daughter of Thomas Ramsay and Margaret Anderson. Margaret was living with Thomas and Jane Chicken, just |
before her marriage to James Atkinson. This explains somewhat the unusual naming of the first child, Jane Chicken Atkinson. She died on 15 February 1880, age 58. |
