William was born on 16 May 1828, the son of Thomas Kish and Elizabeth Dobson, at the Wear Tavern, on Prospect Row, Sunderland, County Durham. The family appears to be in the process of migrating their name from Kershaw to Kish, as documentation continues to be Kershaw, while publicly they use the name Kish. William became a Pilot and later on a Shipowner with a fleet of sailing colliers, one of which was the ELIZABETH & CATHERINE, 348 tons, built by the Thompsons in 1864. After William's death in 1875, his son Thomas took control of the fleet of sailing ships and | gradually sold them off. The family went into Steamships and also had a Chandlery, and during the 1880's they set up a Shipbuilding firm with Henry Boolds, with a yard at Pallion. The family business suffered from a series of blunders culminating in a Board of Trade enquiry into the wrecking of the steamship FURIOUS in 1886 in which the owner, Thomas Kish and the captain, John George Kish were accused of fraud. The trial lasted several months and although the case against them was never proven it was highly suspicious and left a lasting stigma. |
