Walter de Winton                               1809-1840           (1st Husband)
Walter was born about 1809, the son of Walter Wilkins and Catherine Eliza Devereux, at Glasbury, Radnorshire, Wales.
The family claimed descent from a Norman lord, called de Wintona, whose lands were around Cowbridge. The surname became corrupted, over time, to Wilkins. Walter was the one
who resumed, by Royal License, the ancient surname of de Winton, on 6 July 1839. It appears that most, if not all family members adopted the name de Winton. Read a brief history of this family.
Julia Cecilia Collinson                        1812-1878
Julia was born on 25 November 1812, the daughter of Rev. John Collinson and Amelia King, at Gateshead, County Durham.
After only nine years of marriage, Walter died. Julia began to write children's books to support her family. She wrote her first novel A Woman's Devotion in 1855. It is the story of a young woman's triumph through self-sacrifice.
Julia remarried in 1857, to William Richard Stretton.
She then wrote two autobiographical novels: The Valley of a Hundred Fires (1860) which describes her parents, and The Queen of the County (1864). Other novels include the highly popular Margaret and her Bridesmaids (1864) and Lords and Ladies (1866).
Charlotte Yonge (1823-1901), a brilliant novelist of the period, wrote about Julia:
"Later she wrote 'The Valley of the Hundred Fires,' tracing
the habits, characters and the destiny of the family of Gateshead. The father [John Collinson] was by this time dead, and extracts from his sermons and diary appear; but 'Emily,' the mother [Amelia King], is the real heroine of the whole narrative, and though there is so little plot that it hardly deserves the name of novel, there is a wonderful charm in the delineation. There are a few descriptions of manners and of dresses which are amusing; nor must we admit the portrait of the grandmother, Mrs. King (called Reine in the book) daughter to the governor of one of the colonies in America before the separation, with the manners of her former princess-ship and something of the despotism."
Charlotte Yonge, 'Mrs.Stretton' in Women Novelists of Queen Victoria's Reign: A Book of Appreciations
(London: Hurst & Blackett 1897) 208-9.

The Gentleman's Magazine, 1840                 OBITUARIES
WALTER DE WINTON, ESQ. M. P.

May 28.   At Maeslough Castle, co. Radnor, aged 30, Walter de Winton esq. M.P. for that county.
He was the eldest son and heir of the late Walter Wilkins, esq. of Maeslough, M.P. for Radnorshire, by the Hon. Catherine-Eliza-Marianna Devereux, (now remarried to William Richard Stretton, esq. sister to the present Viscount Hereford.
At the general election of 1835 he became a candidate, on the Reform interest, for the county of Glamorgan, which his father had previously represented, and his grandfather for thirty-six years.   He was opposed by Sir John Benn Walsh, Bart. but was successful by a majority of twenty-seven, the termination of the poll being, for
       Walter Wilkins, esq. . . . . .483
       Sir J. B. Walsh . . . . . . . . . .456
In 1837 he was re-elected without opposition.
He assumed, together with his brothers and cousins, the name of De Winton instead of Wilkins, by royal license dated July 6, 1839, their descent being derived from Robert de Wintonia or of Winchester, who came into Glamorganshire with Robert Fitz Hamon.
The death of Mr. De Winton will be felt in a large district of the country, as the liberality with which he expended his princely income was highly beneficial to the agricultural and commercial community.
He married in 1831, Julia Cecilia, second daughter of the Rev. Richard John Collinson, Rector of Gateshead, co. Durham, by whom he has left an infant family.
