Dr. Thomas Hicks                             1805-1878
  Thomas was born on 6 August 1804, the son of George and Ann Hicks, at Baldock, Hertfordshire. He married Helen Nash.
  Dr Hicks took Helen back to Whitwell, and they stayed there 20 years. In 1850 Thomas Hicks retired and they moved to Bronshill Villa, St Mary Church Road, Newton Abbot, Devon. He had enough money from his 750-acre estate in Derrenatra, Cork (near Skibbereen). By 1875 they were living at Upton Lodge, in Torquay, and in 1875-76 Dr Hicks became a JP. He died soon afterwards. 		    Son, Thomas Nash Hicks matriculated at Brasenose, Oxford, on February 5, 1850, was a "scholar", 1850-54, got his B.A. in 1853 and his M.A. in 1856. He was curate of St Mary Magdalene, Upton, Torquay, from 1856 until May 1879 when he became the first vicar of Ilsham, Devon, a post he held until 1881. He was greatly liked by his parishioners. His will was proved in London on December 10, 1904. There are two plaques to him in St Matthias's Church, Ilsham, and his portrait used to hang on the wall there.

Helen Nash                                       1809-1893
  Helen was born on 21 October 1809, the daughter of George Augustus Nash and Lydia Watson, at Cornhill, London.
Helen was a minor when she married Dr Hicks, and had to obtain the consent of her guardians - her mother, family trustee and friend Frederick Cowper, and lawyer Samuel Dendy.
  Helen drew her will up on May 29, 1879, and it was proved in London on May 16, 1893
