He served in the Royal Air Force, was a Member of Parliament 1943-1945, and High Sheriff for Durham County in 1951-1952, and was chairman and managing director of T. W. Greenwell & Co. Ltd.

In the First World War he served in the R.G.A., R.F.C., and R.A.F. Between the wars he served in the Territorial Army and was made an Honorary Colonel after he had been released from the Army in 1940 to return to the ship repairing industry.
