Thomas William Greenwell               1867-1948
Thomas was born about 1867, the son of Thomas George Greenwell and Ann Herring, at Sunderland, County Durham.
In 1901 Thomas founded the firm of T. W. Greenwell & Co. Ltd, the largest firm of ship repairers in Sunderland.   At first the firm made use of two public dry docks, but soon the business demanded the construction of a new larger dry dock.   During the war years they proved their worth by carrying out a wide range of conversions, and undertaking repairs to destroyers, corvettes, naval escort vessels, tank landing ships and craft, beach protection craft, boom defence vessels, salvage and dredging craft, floating cranes, merchant ships, and the fixing and overhauling of guns and other defence equipment on board merchant ships.
