John was born about 1836, the son of William Milburn and Elizabeth Cameron, at Ginns, Preston Quarter, Whitehaven, in Cumberland. Whitehaven is 38m SW. of Carlisle. John was a Coalminer. John was living in Newfield when he married Dorothy Cleasby on 12 July 1862, at Byers Green, in the Parish Church of St Andrew, Auckland.

Dorothy was born 22 January 1840, the daughter of Robert Cleasby and Betty Watson, at Chapel Row, Shildon, which is 3m SE of Bishop Auckland. She resided in Newfield at the time of her marriage.
