Admiral Richard Laird Warren              1806-1875
  Richard was born about 1806, the eldest son of Vice-Admiral Frederick Warren, and Mary Laird, in Scotland.   He entered the Royal Navy on 1 August 1822; passed his examination in 1828; obtained his first commission 1 January 1829; was appointed 18 August following and 20 November 1830, to the Victory 104, flag-ship of Hon. Sir Robert Stopford at Portsmouth, and Saphire 28, Capt. Hon. William Wellesley, fitting for the West Indies; and from 10 September 1831 until advances to the rank of Commander, 24 December 1833, was employed in the Ises 50, as Flag-Lieutenant to his father at the Cape of Good Hope.   He obtained command, 21 September 1835 and 13 October 1836, of the Snake 16 and Serpent 16, on the North America and West India station; he was superseded from the latter vessel on the occasion of his promotion to Post-rank, 9 May 1839; and he served next, from 4 August 1841 until paid off at the close of 1843, in the Magicienne 24, on the Mediterranean station.
