Richard was born on 7 January 1857, The son of Thomas Arthur Richard Blair and Frances Catherine Hare, in Milborne, Dorset. At the age of 18, he joined the Indian Civil Service, as a lowly sub-deputy opium agent. In the course of his unremarkable career, he found himself posted to some of the remotest corners of British India, often shifting posts every year. In the earlier parts of the year, an opium agent had to travel round the district, giving advances to the poppy farmers, and taking thumbprints; later, he would return to check on the quality of the crop. The job was clearly dull and repetitious. He obtained a 3 month leave in 1907, sailing to England. He retired in 1912, and returned to England, to join his family, who had sailed back to England in 1904. The family moved to Shiplake, Oxfordshire.
Ida Mabel Limouzin 1875-1943
Ida was born about 1875, the daughter of Matthew Limouzin and Theresa Catherine Halliley, in Penge, in the London Borough of Bromley. Her mother was English and her father was French, a merchant who had grown up in Burma.
