He died at age 41 in a nursing home in Newcastle upon Tyne, 4 February 1918, and was buried at Mere Knolls Cemetery, Monkwearmouth.

4 February 1918 DEATH
The death occurred in a nursing home in Newcastle, this morning, of Mr. Joseph Andrew Thompson, of East Boldon House, member of the firm of Messers. J. L. Thompson and Sons, Shipbuilders, North Sands, Sunderland. Deceased, who was 41 years of age had been in ill health for some time, was the son of the late Mr. Robert Thompson, Langholm Towers, and Over Dinsdale, near Darlington. He leaves his widow, the daughter of the late Mr. J. E. Thompson of Thornhill Park, Sunderland, and a young son. His funeral fixed for Wednesday first, the interment to be in the Mere Knolls Cemetery, Monkwearmouth.
