MISS GWEN LALLY

PAGEANT MASTER AND
PLAY PRODUCER
Miss Gwen Lally. O.B.E., pageant master, play producer, and lecturer, died on Sunday.   The daughter of Canon Jocelyn Speck, she was educated at home and acted under the management of Sir Herbert Tree at His Majesty's Theatre and at the Old Vic during the First World War.   Subsequently she was the producer of many pageants - at Warwick, Tewkesbury, Runnymeade, Dudley Castle, Malvern, and elsewhere.   She directed and produced at repertory theatres in Leeds and Westcliff on Sea, and was known as a lecturer on the theatre.
Gwen Lally as a pageant Master was in the line of her distinguished predecessors Frank Lascolles and Louis N. Parker.   The first woman to succeed in this sphere, her work was mostly in the more spacious days when leisure was not spent in passive entertainment, and leading local figures could afford to finance such projects.   It was an age of megaphones not microphones and Gwen Lally owed as much to her powerful personality and striking figure as to her knowledge and flair.   She handled vast crowds as easily as numerous committees and she knew the art of delegation.   She inspired a loyalty in every social stratum of her cast and if she appeared to some as a showman this is a necessary part of the pageant master's craft.
As pageantry changed under the influence of the film to a less leisurely entertainment, Gwen Lally never quite accepted this development nor the idea of a local authority as patron.   Technical advances seemed unimportant to her as she inevitably belonged to the inter war period.
In her many productions thousands of amateur players enjoyed her rehearsals and enlarged their lives through her inspiration while thousands of spectators have been entertained and often thrilled by flashes of her skill as for example the memorable Angels on Tewkesbury Abby tower.
