Burial: at Southwick Church Yard

The Sunderland Echo Nov 1908                   OBITUARIES
DEATH OF MR JAS HERRING

It is with regret that we record the death at his residence, Morton Palms, Darlington, of Mr. James Herring, formerly of Southwick.   The deceased, who was 75 years of age, had been ailing for some time and a week or two ago, his illness took a serious turn, and gradually failing, he expired on Sunday.
Although Mr. Herring, for many years, had lived at Darlington, he often visited Sunderland, in which district he had large interests in land, particularly in Southwick where he had an estate, he was well known.   Mr. Herring was born at Southwick where his father had considerable landed estates, and on the death of the latter he succeeded to estates at Southwick and took a great interest in local affairs.   He was at one time overseer for Southwick, and was also a member of the Board of Guardians and of the Southwick Local Board of Health.   He was kindly disposed to the deserving poor, and respected by all who knew him as a man of strict integrity.
He leaves a widow and a grown up family.   The funeral will take place at Southwick Church Yard on Thursday at 12:45 p.m.
