The house was a Cromwellian garrison during the English Civil War, hence all the armoury in the Great Hall. There was also a nasty murder there, which was detected. The owner of the house at the time ("wild" Will Darrell) was tried in front of Lord Chief Justice Popham in Salisbury. Wild Bill bribed him with the house in return for his life. The house then passed to the Popham family on Darrell's death.
