Frederick was born on 10 December 1822, the son of Frederick Warren and Mary Laird, at Strathmartine, Angus, Scotland. He entered the Navy on 7 August 1836; passed his examination on 14 July 1842; served as Mate on the St. Vincent 120, flag-ship of Sir Edward Codrington at Portsmouth, and Royal George and Victoria and Albert yachts, both commanded by Capt. Lord Adolphus FitzClarence; was advanced to the rank of Lieutenant (after having accompanied the Queen on her visit to the King of the French and the King of the |
Belgians) 25 September 1843; and was appointed, 19 October following, to the Fox 42, Commodore Sir Henry Martin Blackwood, fitting for the East Indies; where he was nominated, 26 April 1847, Additional of the Vernon 50, flag-ship of Rear-Admiral Sam Hood Inglefield.
He returned to England at the close of 1848.
In July, 1846, Lieut. Warren received a medal from the Royal Humane Society in acknowledgment of his having risked his life for the purpose of saving others from a watery grave. |
