SIX SOLDIER SONS

REMARKABLE FAMILY GATHERING.

When the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers was stationed in the Straits, amongst the officers that proceeded to Penang with the two companies that formed th Penang detachment, was Lieut Gerard Frederick Towlerton Leather, a fine upstanding figure of a soldier.   He is sure to have some old friends in Penang who will be pleased to read this, of a remarkable family gathering at his house, of which the venerable Mrs. Leather was the honoured central personage:-
  Belford, Northumberland, October 23, .-
Middleton Hall, two miles from here, a beautiful country seat in the midst of a 9,000 acre estate, will to-morrow be the scene of a remarkable family gathering.   In the hall dining-room in the evening six soldier brothers (one of whom has a soldier son) and their wives and four daughters - two of whom have soldier husbands - will gather at the family board to do honour to their mother, who on that day reaches her seventieth birthday.   Words of affectionate congratulation will be offered, and then, all standing, the old lady's health will be drunk in a port that
was laid down specially for the purpose sixty-five years ago.
The venerable mother is Mrs. Leather of the Friary, Tickhill, Doncaster.   She is as tall and straight as her soldier sons.   Traces of silver are only just beginning to show in her dark hair.   She can walk better than many women forty years younger, and spends hours a day in the open either walking or busy at her favorite hobby of gardening.   Of her ten children there is none that is not straight and shapely and strong.   Of her thirteen grandchildren the same can be said.
On Active Service
The eldest son is Major Gerard Leather, of the 5th (Northumberland) Fusiliers, better known as "The Fighting Fifth."   It is in his place, Middleton Hall, that the gathering will be held.   Major Leather's son Ralph, who comes of age next year, will also be present.   He holds a commission in the Warwickshire Yeomanry.
Five of the brothers saw active service in South Africa with north-country regiments.   Captain du Santory Leather, the second son, now of the 3rd Northumberland Fusiliers, served with the 3rd Durham Light Infantry.   Captain Ernest served with the 3rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.

Major Kenneth, now of the 4th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, served in the war with the 1st Battalion.   Edward the fifth son, was a Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, and Christopher, the youngest, succeeded getting a commission at the age of seventeen with the 3rd Durham Light Infantry.   In South Africa he was transferred to the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and saw more fighting than many of his senior officers.   He was in command of a small detachment that held a kopje for three hours against a much heavier surrounding force.
Four Daughters
Of the four daughters of Mrs. Leather, Beatrice, the eldest is the wife of Colonel R. Scott, D. L., now commanding the 7th Northumberland Fusiliers.   He served in the war with the 3rd Battalion.   Eleanor, the second daughter, is the wife of Mr. Bryan Laing, who served with the Northumberland Yeomanry.   The remaining daughters are Mrs. Geoffrey Stannisland and Miss Rosamund Leather.
Middleton Hall, Belford, Northumberland

A splendid record !   Mrs. Gertrude E. Leather of Belford, Northumberland, who is 70 years of age,
with her six sons, all of whom have served or are still serving in the Army.
