Fenwick Yellowley Hedley             1844-1924
Fenwick was born on 2 March 1844, the son of Fenwick Yellowley Hedley and Susan Hazel Hunt, in Scotland. The
family immigrated to the United States in 1852, and settled for a while in St Louis, Missouri, where he attended school. The family then moved to Carlinville, Illinois, where he attended Blackburn University.

After university, he learned the printing trade working at the Carlinville Democrat newspaper. He managed to meet, and talk with Abraham Lincoln, when Lincoln made a call on the publisher. He was very impressed with Mr. Lincoln.

On 24 August 1861 he enlisted in the army, and fought in many battles of the civil war. After his initial enlistment period, he re-inlisted, as a veteran volunteer. In 1865 he was commissioned lieutenant by President Lincoln, and was assigned to staff duty as assistant adjutant general of the 3rd Brigade, 4th Division, 17th Corps. He acted as such during the campaigns in Georgia and the Carolinas until the end of the war.

He returned to Macoupin County, Illinois, and started his career as a newspaperman in Bunker Hill, at the Union Gazette. By 1867 he was the owner, and renamed it the Bunker Hill Gazette. He ran the paper until 1898.
Fenwick married Mary Elizabeth Harlan in 1868. He was appointed postmaster in 1872. His first wife died in 1879, at age 32. Three years later he married Sarah Sanborn.

As Fenwick was an accomplished musician, he became the choir director and organist at the Bunker Hill Congregational
Church. Since he traveled out of town frequently, he began teaching a young lady named Ella Brown to play the organ in his absence. Spending so much time with Ella Brown created a bit of a problem, both with his wife, and also another gentleman, a John R. Richards, the mayor of Bunker Hill, who was courting Ella. This led to many confrontations, and concluded on June 12, 1897, with an attack on Fenwick, which resulted in Fenwick killing Mr. Richards.

There was a trial, which acquitted Fenwick, but his wife ended up divorcing him. About a year later, Fenwick left Bunker Hill, for St Louis, then Kansas City, but settled in Brooklyn, New York, with his third wife, Ella Brown, where he died in 1924.
