Edward Graham                               1885-1964
Edward was born on 16 January 1885, the son of George Graham and Jane Robson, in Easington, County Durham,. He was 20 years old, and living in Newcastle, when he decided to go to America. He boarded the SS Cymric on 29 September 1905, in Liverpool, arriving at Boston on 5 October. He then headed to Zeigler, Illinois, where a coal mine job was waiting for him. He met a girl, who had also come over from England, named Esther Tipling. They were married on 27 December 1909. In April of 1912, when their only son, George, was a year old, the family went back to England for a visit. Edward returned in July, but "Hetty" and George stayed on returning in August. Edward and Esther became U.S. citizens on 12 September 1919. The death of his brother William on 15 January 1920, prompted Edward to apply for a United States Passport, so he could travel back to England for a visit. He returned to America from Liverpool on 18 June, on the SS Haverford, of the American Line, arriving at Philadelphia on 5 July 1920. They moved to West City (just outside of Benton), Illinois. Edward died at age 79, on 28 March 1964, in the Miner's Hospital, in St. Christopher, Illinois. Hettie died 30 April 1969.
