The ASSISTANT-JUDGE said - We find that it is true that that you are respectably connected, as you have stated, and that you have given your friends a great deal of trouble in extricating you from difficulties in which you have involved yourself. Unfortunately you came into possession of a large fortune at an early age, and commenced a life of | extravagance and folly which has brought you to this position. You have expressed a wish to emigrate, and your friends desire to assist you. At the end of this period of imprisonment to which you must be sentenced you will have a better chance of recovering yourself than falls to the lot of many persons convicted of crime. The sentence is that you be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for nine months. Upon Thomas' release from prison, he boarded the passenger ship Ulcoats, under ship Captain Robert Potts for sailing on March 3, 1865 from Gravesend to Auckland (arr 26 June 1865) then on to the City of Melbourne, via Sydney. One should also note that his wife Edith Oliver, did not accompany him on this trip. |
