Jane was born Jane Coates in 1834, daughter of Henry Coates, in County Down, Ireland. Her first marriage was to James McClure on 22 February 1856, at St Marks Parish Church of Ireland, Newtownards, County Down, Ireland. James McClure died March 26th 1869 aged 32. There were four children in that first marriage.
