Man knocked down
Septimus Newby (aged 73) of 29 Cleveland Street, South Shields, is detained in the Ingham Infirmary with a broken left leg and cuts to his face after being knocked down by a car in Kepple Street last night,.
Driver of the car was Brian Lewis of 23 Cleveland Street.

Shieldsman dies after accident
An inquest was being opened at South Shields today on Mr. Septimus Newby, aged 73, of 29 Cleveland Street, South Shields, who died following a road accident.
Mr. Newby was knocked down by a car in Kepple Street on Wednesday night by a car driven by Brian Lewis, of 27 Cleveland Street, South Shields.
South Shields police today appealed for any witnesses of the accident, which happened at 8:35 p.m. to get in touch with police headquarters.
