Robert was born on 21 February 1836, the son of Robert Bowne Minturn and Anna Mary Wendell, in New York City. He graduated from Columbia University in 1856. He is the author of "New York to Delhi" (New York, 1858). As Vice President of the railroad that founded the town of Minturn, Colorado, he gave his name to that town
