St. Margaret's was one of four ancient chapelries of St. Oswald's Parish.
St. Michael's, Witton Gilbert and St. Bartholomew's, Croydale became the churches of their respective parishes
(St. Leonards, the fourth, has disappeared).
St. Margaret's included all of Framwellgate and Crossgate until 1858
St. Cuthbert (1863) took over the major part of Framwellgate Moor and a portion of Framwellgate within the borough of Durham, leaving only about 600 acres to St. Margaret's.
