Richard Dartnell                                     1806-1872
Richard was born about 1806, the son of John Dartnell and Alice Russell, in Limerick, Ireland. After his father died, his mother moved the family down to Cork. This is where he met and married Helena Monsell Checkley. They lived in Cork for some time and after some years moved to Mitchelstown where Richard got a good appointment under the Earl of Kingston. The family remained in Mitchelstown until the Kingston Estates were placed in Chancery and after waiting on in Ireland for some time hoping to get a good occupation he decided on going to South America where his brothers  Russell  and  William  were  settled.  Richard   and Helena traveled there about the year 1845, leaving their seven surviving children in Mallow with Helena's sisters, Rachel and Fanny Checkley. After about three years Helena returned to Ireland, bringing the new borne Emmaline with her, and pregnant with Richard, who would be born about three months later. In about two years she returned to Peru taking the children with her. Son John Louis had been sent on alone to Callao soon after her arrival back in Ireland. The family sailed from Liverpool on "The Countess of Sefton", on the 9th of May 1850, arriving at Callao on the 15th of August.
Helena Monsell Checkley                     1809-1887
Helena was born on 15 October 1809, the youngest daughter of Thomas Checkley Esq. and Penelope Hodges, in Mallow Parish, Co. Cork, Ireland.
