Philip was born on 3 December 1771, the youngest son of James and Sophia Lundy Laing, at Fife, Scotland. The yeoman farmer and shipowner, migrated to Sunderland from the Fifeshire village of Pittenweem, in 1792, in command of a ship. His older brother John was already in the shipbuilding business with his son David on the north-west corner of the North Sands. Philip would join with his older brother John, on the Monkwearmouth shore in the following year. John's son David would die in 1796. |
Philip had been trained as doctor of medicine, but changed his vocation.
The brothers lived on Church Street, Monkwearmouth, near their yard.
Philip first married Elizabeth Rudd, in 1804, she died six years later in 1810.
In 1818, the brothers dissolved the partnership, leaving Philip to carry on the business himself.
His second wife was Anne Jopling, whom he married in 1818.
Philip moved into Deptford house which stood within the Deptford shipyard until 1856, and here was born his son James, who came to excercise a more powerful influence than perhaps any other man has done on the development of Sunderland shipbuilding.
Deptford House had been built by Mr. Biss of Castle Eden.
Philip died on 16 December 1852. |
