Lawrence was born about 1758, the son of Lawrence Brown and Matilda Constable, in Scotland.
Matilda's brother was George Constable, who purchased the estate of Wallace Craigie.
George was a friend of Sir Walter Scott, who wrote a book about him named "The Antiquary"
