John Twizell Wawn                   1801-1859
John Twizell was born about 1801, the son of Christopher Wawn and Margaret Twizell, at South Shields, County Durham. He was the only member of his family to come prominently before the public gaze. He was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament for South Shields in 1841 and reelected in 1847. He was defeated in the election of 1852 and retired from politics. The J.P.  for  West  Boldon  and  a  shipowner,  he  was   interested in all matters pertaining to shipping. He was also a Director of the Northumberland and Durham District Bank. It was possibly the failure of this bank in 1857 that ruined the finances of the family generally. He was twice married, firstly to Emma Horn of Sunderland, County Durham, in 1827, and secondly to Mary Matterson of York, Yorkshire.
