Catherine had Five children, and all are still living. |
Captain and Adjutant Harold Burkett, King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry), who died on June 5 from wounds received in action the same day, was the elder son of Mr. H. Burnett, of JUnction Road, Sheffield, and was 24 years of age. He enlisted in a local battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment ion August 1914, and received his commission in December, 1914. He went to the front in 1915, and took part with his division in the battle of Loos. He was twice wounded in the first few minutes of the advance which began on July 1, 1916. On his recovery, after three months in hospital, he rejoined his regiment at the front, and was promoted | Captain in September, 1916. From then to the time of his death he was almost continuously in the firing line. Captain Burkett was educated at King Edward VII, school, Sheffield, and at Sheffield University. He was a keen athlete, and twice won the championship at his school sports, and was second in the championship at his university sports. He was captain of the school football team, and played both Association and Rugby. In his battalion he was president of the Sports Committee, and took a keen interest in the men's recreation. His commanding Officer writes:- "He was such a fine soldier and good adjutant, and adored by all the men." |
