Edward was born 14 October 1804, the son of Edward Huggins and Esther Bowerbank, in Lamonby, Skelton Parish, Cumberland County. He married Elizabeth Routledge on 7 October 1826, at Castle Sowerby, Cumberland County.
It appears that Edward and Elizabeth emigrated to Canada to join other family members after the death of Edward's mother, Esther, bringing his father, Edward with them.
He purchased the N 1/4 (50 acres) of Lot 23 Concession 5 in Whitby Township in 1837, from a Joseph Wilkinson.
In the 1851 census, Edward is recorded as living on Concession 5 Lot 1 of Whitby Township. Shortly thereafter, he seems to have left the area, and by the 1861 census has taken up residence at Concession 7 Lot 2 in West Zorra, Oxford
